Summary: It was by chance that these two should meet, and it was by chance that they should fall in love. Chibi-usa works at a questionable place offering sex for money. Rubeus happens to stumble in one day and since then has been unable to leave Chibi-usa alone.


He cursed under his breath as he walked down the street, hands in his pockets and ruby shirt slightly unbuttoned. Again. Again Rubeus had been the one to blame for the project being a failure. It was always him taking the blame for Esmeraude. She couldn’t be anything but perfect in his eyes. Honestly, it was a little disgusting how Esmeraude always spooned over the other man especially when said man was not even interested in her the slightest.

Rubeus stopped walking when he got to his familiar destination. He had been coming here for a few weeks now ever since a coworker took him down to this section of the city saying, “It’s a great way to relax!” At first Rubeus thought that the man was ridiculous. Rubeus was not the kind of man who needed this to relax. What he needed to do was find a way to get rid of Esmeraude. That’s what he told himself at least, but then he saw her. She was young and unusual, and it was not just because of her pink hair. There was something in her eyes that Rubeus wanted to uncover. That wondering and need to know was what made Rubeus go over there. He tried to talk to her, to uncover those eyes, but he barely got anywhere.

Of course they had sex too. Great sex.

There was just something about her that made him come back every week. And judging by the rumors he was not the only one. One night Rubeus got upset at her for sleeping with other men. “I’m a prostitute.” Her reply sounded sad and hurtful, like she did not want to admit the truth to herself, as if she wanted something else. Rubeus immediately regretted his outburst and inwardly smacked himself for losing control like that for no reason. It is not like he knew her personally. He had no reason to get upset.

And still, every week he returned, and ever dawn he would leave after spending a night with her in his arms. At first she was surprised that he would stay the night, and a little confused as to why. “Because I want to,” was all that Rubeus said. He still doesn’t know why she allowed him to stay. He certainly did not have a good reason for wanting to stay the night. He himself did not even know why he wanted to hold the pink haired woman and sleep next to her. She even took him to her private room.

He told himself that it meant nothing, but as the weeks passed they begun to open up to each other. It begun to become something instead of nothing and no matter how badly he tried to deny it Rubeus was falling in love with her.

He had found out that her real name was Chibi-usa one night. She had asked him, in that sad, scared voice, if he would call her by her real name when they had sex that night. Rubeus did not even have to think twice. That night felt realer then anything he had ever experiences in his life.

“Come with me,” Rubeus had said one dawn as he was buttoning up yesterday’s shirt and getting ready to leave once again.

“What?” Chibi-usa asked in surprise. She was still in bed trying to cover her eyes from the morning light.

Rubeus took a hold of her hand. “Leave this place,” he whispered. She pulled her hand away and turned her head. “Chibi-usa.”

The sound of her name was enough to bring tears to her eyes. When was the last time she had cried? Years. For years she had learned to keep her emotions hidden but now everything was breaking. She had foolishly opened her heart and now her carefully carved mask was falling and breaking.

He wrapped his arms around her. For the first time since his mother died Rubeus had wanted to protect someone. He tightened his arms around her and held her close to his chest in an attempt to sooth her even a little bit.

“I can’t,” she finally said after the tears had calmed down.

“Why?” Rubeus had whispered. But his only answer was more tears. “I’ll kidnap you if you don’t come with me,” he said. “I’ll take you away to the country side where no one can find you.”

Chibi-usa was smiling under her tears. Her mind was wondering, dreaming about running away from this life and living with Rubeus in a little house in the country. Her mind was always dreaming of that far away place, away from the city, and away from this life.

“I’m sorry, Rubeus,” Chibi-usa whispered as she pulled away from the man.

“Why? Why are you so scared to leave this place?” Rubeus was a little upset now.

“I…”

“Just come with me, Chibi-usa,” Rubeus said. “I have enough money. I can take care of you.”

She was silent. Something inside of her was screamed for her to just go, to get out of here, and yet there was also an invisible force telling her that she had to stay here.

“Chibi-usa,” he whispered her name. She could feel the tears building up in her eyes again.

“I’m sorry.”

He left that dawn irritated. He had quickly put on his jacket, grabbed his other belongings and rushed out the door. For a while Chibi-usa could not move. The pain in her heart was so heavy because she knew that he was not coming back. And that ill feeling of belonging here was even apparent now.

To her surprise he came back the next day. Again Rubeus asked her to leave with him. Again she told him that she could not leave.

“Why?” Rubeus asked a little irritated.

“I can’t,” was all Chibi-usa answered.

This continued for days. Rubeus would come over asking her to leave with him, asking her why she would not leave, and then leaving that night only to come back the next night. There was no sex, no conversation, no being in each other’s arms before dawn.

When Rubeus did not come one night Chibi-usa was sure that he had finally given up. That one night turned into two weeks and Chibi-usa finally felt like she could repair her mask and go back to how her life was before him. So when he showed up the next day she was surprised. She was even more surprised that he had two train tickets in his hand. This time Rubeus would not take no for an answer.

“I can’t,” Chibi-usa begged with tears in her eyes.

“Give me one good reason!” Rubeus exclaimed. “One reason and I’ll leave.’

“I belong here,” Chibiusa said.

“No you don’t,” Rubeus grunted. “You belong with me and I just brought a house in the country side so you are going there.”

“Rubeus…”

“No. I’ve had enough, Chibi-usa,” with that he took a hold of her arm and tried to drag her out of the room.

“Rubeus!” Chibi-usa exclaimed. “You are going to cause a scene.”

“I don’t care,” he replied.

“I can’t,” she whimpered.

“Not good enough,” Rubeus said. He still helf onto her arm but he had stopped trying to get her to move. Instead he was looking into her eyes. Chibi-usa.”

For a moment she could not talk. All she could do was stare into his eyes. They were full of hope and love. Oh! How badly she wanted to believe in those eyes. How badly she wanted to leave with him.

“I love you,” Rubeus said. She couldn’t hold back the tears any more. “Chibi-usa.’ He continued to whisper her name and wipe away the tears from her face.

“It was my choice to be here,” she said once she regained her composure. It was the second time that he had been able to make her lose control of herself like that. “I can’t go back. I can’t face my family.”

Rubeus was unsure of what to say. He never was good with comforting people, so he leaned in and gently kissed Chibi-usa instead. “It’s your family. They must be worried about you,” he said. “If they love you then this doesn’t matter.” Rubeus inwardly groaned to himself. He really had no idea what to tell the young woman.

“Rubeus,” she whispered. She looked up at him from teary eyes and with a small smile on her face said, “Let’s go.” That feeling of not being able to escape was a little less heavy in her mind now, and she could not help but think that maybe she could have the life that she dreamed of.

“Finally!’ Rubeus exclaimed as he once again started to drag her out of the building.

“Wait! I have to pack,” she said.

“I’ll buy you new stuff,” Rubeus said. He was too much in a hurry to let go of her. Besides, he wanted her away form this place as soon as possible so that she did not have the option of changing her mind.

But Chibi-usa got the better of him and was able to convince him to allow her to grab a few things. Of course he was standing over her impatiently as she did so.

When they where on the train, after waiting at the station for three hours because someone was a little too paranoid about someone else possibly escaping, Chibi-usa turned to her lover next to her and asked, “Do you think I’ll ever see my family again?”

Rubeus shrugged his shoulders and answered, “Possibly.”

“Do you think it will work out if I did see them again?”

“Definitely.”

Chibi-usa turned to the window with a tiny smile on her face. She started thinking about seeing her mother and father again, seeing her best friend Hotaru. In her mind it was a happy event filled with lots of hugging and crying, and overall joy for her. Once again she dreamed only this time, as she looked outside the window at the sun rising over the horizon, she had hope that maybe one day this dream could come true.
